A skier in his 50s died after hitting a tree while skiing at Nakiska Mountain Resort. The skier, whose identity has not been declared, passed away on Monday afternoon.

According to Cam Heke of STARS air ambulance, the man had fatal wounds when STARS arrived on scene. STARS responded to Nakiska Ski Resort just before 1:00 p.m. on Monday to meet the ground ambulance.

“He had life-threatening injuries and it was decided the patient would continue to be transported by ground ambulance to Foothills Medical Centre in Calgary,” said Cam.

He was awake and responsive while ski patrollers and RCMP attended at the mountain resort, but as EMS rushed the man to meet an air ambulance, his condition became critical.

He was transported by ground ambulance to Foothills Medical Centre in Calgary, where he was pronounced dead.

Nakiska is about 90 kilometres west of Calgary.
