Mississippi authorities are searching for a fake cop who might have shot dead two people along a remote stretch of highway.

“There are a lot of similarities, namely the fact that the shootings occurred on the side of the road,” Mississippi Department of Public Safety spokesman Warren Strain said. “There are several leads that we’re following.”

The two people were identified as Thomas Schlender, 74, and Lori Anne Carswell, 48. Schlender was found in his car on Interstate 55 in close by Panola County on May 8 while Carswell was found near her car on Mississippi Highway 713 in Tunica County on May 11.

Police says something made both the victims slow down and step out of the car. There are high possibilities that the murder or murderers are dressed in police uniform and posing as law enforcement.

“We urge everyone to be cautious while driving, especially at night,” the Tate County Sheriff’s Office posted on their Facebook page.

“If someone attempts to pull you over with flashing lights and you feel unsure of stopping, DON’T PULL OVER. Use your cell phone and dial 911 and if it’s a real officer then the dispatcher will confirm it for you and if it’s not a real officer they will send help to you.”

Schlender’s son-in-law, Matt Anderson, said there was nothing more important to Schlender than his children, especially his grandchildren. They were the loves of his life.

He said: “What happens when there’s a police officer behind you? You pull over. None of us – ever – give it a second thought… You trust a police officer. Was robbery a motive or are these items some kind of trophy for whoever has done this?”
