James Leopold, 33, charged with murdering his fiancée has been found guilty of manslaughter. Leopold claimed the incident was an accident at a night of drunken sex. The twelve member jury began deliberations shortly before 11:30 Wednesday morning.

Leopold from Nova Scotia is charged with second-degree murder in the death of Laura Lee Robertson Wednesday. Robertson went missing in April 2011. Her body was found in a wooded area in Greenfield, soon after Leopold was arrested as a suspect.

According to Leopold, he hit Robertson in the neck with no intensions of taking her life. He said it was an instant reaction when she bit his penis during sex, which was later proven in the reports.

“It just happened,” he cried. “It just happened so fast,” he repeated several times. “I panicked… It’s just how I got her. It just happened, I can’t even explain it. It wasn’t something I wanted to happen and it’s too late. She was dead right away. It happened so fast she probably didn’t know what happened.”

Defence lawyer Chris Manning urged the jury to just reflect on Leopold’s mental state when he accidentally killed his beloved fiancée with his own hands. However, during the trial in Bridgewater, it became evident that Robertson died of asphyxiation which suggests that Leopold’s hands would have had to be on Robertson’s neck for longer than just a punch.

During interrogation, Leopold told police he hit Robertson in the neck and she instantly died. According to the forensic pathologist, Robertson was probably strangled to death. He said she suffered “significant force to the neck,” that would have occurred over four to five minutes.
