Investigators with the York Regional Police #4 District Criminal Investigations Bureau are seeking public assistance in identifying a group of men who have been selling low-quality leather items in the City of Vaughan and the north Toronto area.

Investigators believe this group of men, mainly of Italian descent, are between 18 and 40 years of age. Though they appear to be connected, they approach victims individually. The individual approaches elderly males with the pretext of selling high-end leather jackets. The individual then befriends the victim and leads them to either an ATM machine or convinces them to
pay in cash. These jackets are counterfeit and of low quality.

The group operates anywhere in the city but more predominantly in the area of plazas or malls.

York Regional Police reminds the public that criminals are opportunists. It is important not to give them the opportunity to make you a victim of crime. Suspects can be very persuasive, using all types of excuses, explanations and offers to lead you away from using your common sense.

Fraud can be avoided when you don’t participate. It is important to be armed with information, so education, good judgment and a healthy dose of skepticism are the best defences against becoming a victim.

The investigation is ongoing.
