The Tracadie-Sheila RCMP is investigating an overnight fire that claimed the life of a young girl.
Police responded to the fire at a home on rue E. Breau in Canton des Basques, N.B., at about 5:00 p.m. on September 17, 2012. The house was already fully engulfed when police and firefighters from Tracadie-Sheila and Rivière-du-Portage/Tracadie-Beach arrived.
A family of six lived in the home. A 41-year-old man, a 32-year-old woman and three children under the age of nine made it out safely. An eight-year-old girl died in the fire. Her body was later recovered from the home.
The man was taken to hospital and is being treated for burns.
The cause of the fire is under investigation by the N.B. Office of the Fire Marshal, however police do not believe it to be suspicious in nature at this time.
