Windsor Police are warning the public to be leery regarding any unsolicited phone calls for computer repair.  This type of scam has been going on for some time and the calls will appear to be legitimate.  The caller will try to convince you that your computer is infected with a virus or a list of other issues,  and it has ‘somehow’ reported this fact to the technical support company. (ie Microsoft or a company that works for Microsoft)  The caller will make this out to be an urgent issue that requires immediate attention.  The caller will typically get you to perform certain tasks on your computer that may show you messages in the Event Viewer.  These messages may be harmless error messages.  The caller will try to convince you that they are in fact some type of virus.

Once the caller has the victim hooked, they will direct you to an internet site to download a program that will allow them to remotely control your computer.  If you permit this to happen, they can get inside your computer and download files and information.  They can also install a real virus that will require a “fix” at a cost to you.

Computer companies do not typically call people or have technical support companies call people to fix computers unsolicited.
