The Toronto MPP, Eric Hoskins, has given up his post in the cabinet as Children and Youth Services Minister in the bid of campaigning for leadership of the provincial Liberal Party.

Hoskins represents the riding of St. Paul’s and has now become the fourth candidate to officially launch his bid for campaigning to become the party leader. Others who have made the announcement so far include Kathleen Wynne, Sandra Pupatello and Glen Murray.

Hoskins mentioned in an official statement that “in the weeks and months ahead, I look forward to the renewal that our party will undergo.” Hoskins added that “I want to be a part of that renewal.” Hoskins will officially kick start his campaign from a news conference scheduled to take place in the first few days of the next week.

Another expected, but not yet confirmed, contender considering giving up the official post and attempting the bid to the Liberal Leadership is the Citizenship and Immigration Minister, Charles Sousa. Sousa has also given numerous hints to the media letting them think that he’s soon going to make the announcement. Sousa has invited media to an unspecified announcement in Mississauga on Saturday. Noticeably, Sousa has not resigned his cabinet post, i.e. a prerequisite for launching a leadership bid, so it’s too early to say yet.

McGuinty let the competition open when he made a sudden announcement of his retirement on Oct. 15, saying he’ll only stay on until a new leader is chosen. Potential candidates are told to launch their bids till Nov. 23. The party will choose McGuinty’s successor the weekend of Jan. 25, 2013, in Toronto.
