The Prime Minister of Canada, Stephen Harper, made an announcement on Saturday declaring that Canada has agreed on a deal to supply military equipment to the Philippines government.

Harper made the announcement during his one-day trip to the country, which was the first since 1997. Harper was welcomed by the Philippines President, Benigno Aquino III. The key agenda of the visit was to boost trade between the two countries, so as a part of it, both countries agreed on a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on defense procurement too.

The deal is officially signed by the Filipino defense department and Canadian Commercial Corp., which will now make it easier for the Philippines to purchase military and security equipment required to defend its territory. This deal is timed very uniquely as the Philippines are currently occupied on a dispute with China over islands in the South China Sea as they try to establish order within its own borders after years of violence caused by insurgent Muslim rebels.

Harper stated while he was making the announcement, that “Canada and the Philippines continue to increase cooperation on security issues.” He asserted that “this MOU will enable the Philippines to acquire the equipment and expertise it needs to fulfill the country’s defence and security agenda, while creating opportunities for the Canadian defence and security sectors in the Philippines.”

On the other hand, Acquino mentioned that “this will help us in our efforts to build our defence and security capabilities.” He added that “I cannot go into specifics lest they be observed by less friendly individuals.”
