In result of a public outcry, the Toronto Transit Commission restored a suspended streetcar driver, who chased after a man he believed had sexually assaulted a passenger. Driver Dino Oroc was restored on full duty with without any loss of pay on Friday, two days after he was sent home on leave, pending a disciplinary meeting for abandoning a streetcar full of passengers.

A spokesperson of TTC, Brad Ross, justified the situation by saying that “we need to go through this process, what we called ‘relieved of duty.’” He explained that “so something has happened, the employee is parked, if you will, until we can investigate further and have a formal meeting and then decisions are made. And so that is what has occurred.” The meeting led the management to “reinforce” the procedures and protocols with Mr. Oroc.

The suspension of Mr. Oroc initiated a public protest on Twitter and local media. Allison O’Keefe, a Twitter user, said that “something is very wrong in our city when this happens. Shame on the #TTC.” Mr. Oroc labeled his public support “a little overwhelming.” 43-years-old Oroc has worked with TTC for 13 years. He generously alleged that “I was being a good Samaritan. I think anybody with a reasonable mind would have done the same thing.”

The President of TTC, Bob Kinnear, announced that he has scheduled to meet the management for ensuring that “discretion and common sense” is now prevailed in any similar situations. “We are comfortable today that this injustice is going to be corrected and that we will not have any future incidents of this kind,” he told reporters.
