The Edmonton Police Service Homicide Section is investigating the death of a male in connection with an alleged assault that took place on the LRT on Friday afternoon.

At approximately 1:52 pm on Friday, Dec. 28, 2012, Northeast Division Patrol Officers responded to Clareview LRT Station after several reports of a disturbance on a LRT train car.  It was reported by ETS Security that a male was assaulted by another male in front of other passengers on a northbound LRT train between the Coliseum and Clareview Stations.

Upon police arrival, a 29-year-old male was found unconscious, and the suspect had fled on foot.  With the assistance of ETS Security, police quickly arrested the suspect near the LRT station.

The unconscious male was treated and transported by EMS to hospital in critical condition with life-threatening injuries.  The male passed away in hospital just after 11 p.m. on Dec. 30, 2012.

Police continue to investigate, and are reviewing video surveillance from the train and the platform, as well as interviewing witnesses.  It is believed that the victim and assailant knew each other.  It is unknown what started the fight, but based on witness accounts the assault was unprovoked and vicious. Incidents of this nature are extremely rare on Edmonton’s LRT system.

Jeremy Newborn29, has been charged with aggravated assault.  In consultation with the Crown, the charges will be upgraded to second degree murder.  The accused is in custody and will appear in court on Dec. 31, 2012.

An autopsy for the deceased 29-year-old male will be scheduled.
