The Minister for International Co-operation, Julian Fantino, made an official announcement on Tuesday while he was on a conference in Ethiopia, that Canada has decided to endow another $13 million in aid to Mali. Fantino was representing Canada at a donor’s conference in Ethiopia’s capital, Addis Ababa, when he mentioned that “I’m announcing that Canada is providing an additional $13 million to a number of ongoing initiatives aimed at addressing the humanitarian needs that are so pressing.”

According to the official website of Canadian International Development Agency, Canada has previously dispersed almost $109.8 million in aid for Mali during the year of 2010-11. Canada recently suspended direct aid to Mali after a coup last spring, while it continued multilateral aid along with other countries through organizations like the UN. African Union mentioned in an endorsed statement that its leaders have raised more than $453 million USD “aimed at bridging the funding gap to expedite the deployment of African-led International Support Mission to Mali (AFISMA).” The statement added that these funds will be employed to improve the capacities and training of the Malian Defence and Security Forces.

A statement of the Canadian government from earlier this week mentioned that last year Canada successfully provided food and nutrition assistance to 1.3 million people in Mali, water and sanitation assistance to more than 49,000 people, along with actions aimed to protect livelihoods and enhance resilience, and cash transfers and cash-for-work programming for 3,000 vulnerable households affected by both the food crisis and conflict in northern Mali.
