After re-inserting the word “royal” in the names of the Canadian air force and navy, the Harper government has now proposed to make another alteration to the identity of Canada’s military. The authorities are currently deciding in a discrete manner to make another change, perhaps for reminding Canadians that their soldiers are actually equipped with arms by altering the Chretien-era “Canadian Forces” to describe the military, and reinstating the former name as “Canadian Armed Forces.”

Analysts claim that in contrast to the previous big deal proclaimed by the Harper government regarding the decision of reinstating the name to Royal Canadian Navy and Royal Canadian Air Force, this recent change is much more concealed. Additionally, analysts identify an allegedly continuing trend of various Canadian governments altering the military’s images according to their own perceptions. A retired lieutenant-colonel and now chair of defence management studies at Queen’s University, Douglas Bland, mentioned that “I’m guessing the government wants to re-establish the image that the Canadian Forces is not Boy Scouts, as (former prime minister Jean) Chretien called them.”

A spokesperson of the Defence Minister Peter MacKay, Paloma Aguilar, alleged that the names Canadian Forces and Canadian Armed Forces are both interchangeable in sight of the National Defence Act. However, she did assure that Canadian Armed Forces “is now being used consistently by the prime minister and Minister MacKay.” She added that “of the two, we think the Canadian Armed Forces is more appropriate,” because “our military is an armed military.”
