The Montreal métro system was shut down abruptly due to unknown reasons on Wednesday after, however, recent update confirms that it is being gradually being restored as of about 1:15 p.m. A complete system-wide shutdown, i.e. completely inactive service on all underground lines and routes, enforced all its users to be left helpless for nearly an hour.

A spokesperson of the Société de transport de Montréal (STM), Amelie Régis, made an official acknowledgment of the shutdown soon after its occurrence, and allegedly blamed the system-wide shutdown on a “server problem.” Later it was Régis announced at around 1:05 p.m., that the service will not be reactivated for at least another 20 minutes. She further added that bus service is being beefed up and shuttle buses are already employed, beginning at Berri-UQÀM station. A tweet from the official account of Société de transport de Montréal (STM), sent at 12:24 p.m., revealed that the Orange line was down “for an undetermined period.” Whereas, its website, i.e. stm.info, displayed that all four lines were not operational. Later, it was again tweet at 12:31 p.m., that the Blue line was down as well.

A previously communicated deadline of 1:10 p.m. to resume the service was subsequently retracted. Régis informed publicly, at the time, that “we don’t know how long the service interruption will last.” Soon after, it was publicly announced through a tweet from STM’s official account at 1:13 p.m., that the service is being gradually restored and will be active soon. Overall the shutdown apparently lasted almost an hour.
