Another contender for the federal Liberal party, Ottawa lawyer David Bertschi, has decided to abort his campaign and drop out of the contest immediately. While making the announcement on Thursday morning, Bertschi stated that “in my case, the critical mass was not there.” Bertschi straightforwardly made the declaration at a news conference on Parliament Hill, as he asserted that he will remain “undaunted” in his pursuit of rebuilding the Liberal Party of Canada, but for the time being, it is in the best interest of the party.

Bertschi boastfully shared his plans of rerunning as the party’s nomination in the Ottawa-Orléans riding, which is at present held by his Conservative rival, Royal Galipeau. Bertschi lost to Galipeau by an estimate margin of 4,000 votes in the last federal election. Bertschi also revealed plainly that he has not been able to raise adequate money to pay off the $75,000 loan that financed his failed campaign. Bertschi refused to support any other candidate in the race, however, he did express his condemnation against B.C. MP Joyce Murray’s idea of a perplexing co-operation with the NDP to defeat the Harper government. He and Murray are “philosophically different,” he said.

Bertschi’s departure has now left only six candidates in the race for the leadership of the third party in the House of Commons, following last week’s exit by Marc Garneau. Apart from Murray and the apparent front-runner Justin Trudeau, remaining four candidates are former MPs Martin Cauchon and Martha Hall Findlay, Toronto lawyer Deborah Coyne, and retired air force lieutenant-colonel Karen McCrimmon.
