After a series of hateful comments, the Regina Police Service has decided to momentarily remove its Facebook page from the social networking website. Initially on Monday, the RPS reported and removed several comments which allegedly criticized an incident occurred over the weekend, when an officer was shot and killed a dog in a Regina backyard. The incident occurred when an officer and a canine member were chasing two suspects and ended up in a yard with a pit bull. The two dogs briefly fought before another officer arrived on scene and shot the pit bull.

An official statement released by the RPS on its website on Thursday night, mentioned that “we are deeply saddened by the nature of the comments and discussion which have been taking place on our Facebook page in the past 24 hours. What was once a place for respectful open communication with our community has been trampled on by people who neither live in our city, nor our province, some don’t even live in Canada. We refuse to be a platform for people to spew hatred, profanity and the promotion of violence.

Additionally, it stated that “we can only be responsible for our municipality and cannot answer to accusations against police services not associated with the Regina Police Service. We see no other option but to temporarily remove this page. We will maintain our website as well as our twitter feed. It is incredibly unfortunate that it has come to this, but the actions of a few have made this space unsafe for Regina citizens. Our goal has always been to promote and maintain a safe community both in real life and online.”
