Several days after the nurses expressed infuriation over the budget, Ontario has announced to enhance a program intended to attract new nurses to the province. The official announcement was made by the Health Minister, Deb Matthews, on Monday as she declared that the Nursing Graduate Guarantee program will be extended, which has been recently linking nursing graduates from Ontario to employers, while accepting graduates from other provinces and territories. Furthermore, the program has been amended and an initiative is included to aid internationally trained nurses to practice in Ontario as well.
According to an official approximation, currently the province hires an average of 2,200 nurses through the $100-million program each year, and now the program is expanded to include 2,600 nurses a year. Addressing a news conference at St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto, Ms. Matthews mentioned that “we are now providing the same opportunity to new nurses who were educated in other provinces and internationally to ensure Ontario has the best nursing workforce providing care to patients.” The announcement was highly praised and applauded by the nurses’ groups, however they pointed out that the program still does not tackle the issue highlighted in the provincial trends showing that nurses are transitioning out of hospitals and into community care and job reductions over the last two years.
The province recounted that almost 16,400 more nurses are working in Ontario in comparison to last decade, whereas the nurses’ groups pointed out that the College of Nurses of Ontario statistics reports that the number of registered nurses has fallen by almost 1,000 between 2010 and 2012. The college assessed that almost 94,000 registered nurses are currently working in the province.
