The Union Montreal party leader, Richard Deschamps, made a ground breaking announced on Thursday, declaring that his party is no more. Deschamps confessed that a series of damning testimonies at the Charbonneau Commission have disgraced the party to an irreparable extent. Consequently, the controversy resulted in numerous resignations, including Mayor Gerald Tremblay and many councilors. Deschamps straight-forwardly announced that the party formerly led by past mayor, Gérald Tremblay, is no longer viable.

Addressing a news conference at the Pointe à Callière museum, Deschamps acclaimed that Union Montreal had rebuilt the city after municipal divergences in 2006, improving the local economy and heightening municipal democracy by creating consultative bodies like the Conseil du patrimoine, Office de consultation publique de Montréal and city ombudsman. At the same time, Deschamps stated that “however, we have to face the facts and, because we are realists and pragmatists, we have reached this unfortunate conclusion.” As a result of the Union Montreal’s dissolution, 38 members of Montreal’s city-wide council are independents, along with 15 belonging to Louise Harel’s Vision Montreal and another 10 sitting under the Projet Montreal banner.

Deschamps shared his intention to keep his seat as an independent councilor, though he expressed to have not decided if he plans to seek the mayoralty, i.e. a job which he recently failed to former Tremblay loyalist, Michael Applebaum, who quit the party and was voted interim mayor by support of municipal opposition after Tremblay resigned. Lastly, Deschamps stated that “I salute Gérald Tremblay, with whom and thanks to whom we have accomplished so much in recent years.”
