After expressing his desire for at numerous occasions for months, Denis Coderre has finally released an official statement to announce that the will be running for the mayor of Montreal. One of most well reputed MPs of Liberal Party, Coderre, was hinting on his intention of running for mayor for months, but it was not until this morning that he assuredly confirmed the rumors. He alleged that he has clear cut reasons for running: “Montreal is a great city that deserves better.” He stated that “Montreal needs a conductor, Montreal needs a bridge-builder. Montreal needs a catalyst so we can believe in that city again.”
The MP recently registered a new party named ‘Equipe Denis Coderre pour Montreal’ with Elections Quebec last month. In the announcement on Thursday, Coderre mentioned that Montreal does not need a savior, but rather someone who can assemble a great team. He vowed to present a distinct and elaborative program for Montreal in the coming weeks. He stated that “it’s time to roll up our sleeves and restore our city’s pride, the self-confidence that has always characterized our community.”
Coderre, a former minister of immigration, first hinted about his interest in Montreal’s top job last November during a spaghetti supper in his Bourassa riding. However, he remained consistent in abstaining from any official announcement in this regard until today. He is now scheduled to retire as a federal MP on June 2, which is being identified as the16th year anniversary of the when he was first elected.
