Recently the Windsor Police Service Financial Crimes Branch has received an increase in complaints reporting incidents with Kijiji. In each complaint, an advertisement has requested a person submit their personal information for either a home rental application, or a job application. Once the information has been provided, the individual collecting the information has attempted to open credit cards in the name of the applicant and the advertisement is taken down. If the incident involved a rental application, the request was to pay the first and last month’s rent through Western Union.

It is unknown if there is a single individual or multiple parties responsible for these incidents. The true location of these parties is unknown as multiple email addresses have been used. A person determined to commit a fraud is able to hide behind email addresses that appear to be legitimate. The emails containing victims’ personal information can be routed to anyplace in the world and can be used for a number of illegal activities.

Kijiji and other websites serve a legitimate purpose in connecting persons for the exchange of goods and services. The Financial Crimes Branch would like to remind the public the provision of your personal information to unknown persons can lead to a stolen identity, which is the key to your credit history and your money. It takes time, work and money to fix your credit and retrieve your money, and it is not always possible to fix all the problems. Everyone should exercise caution in providing personal information to any individual over the telephone, at the front door, or over the internet.
