In a latest statement issued by Environment Canada on Wednesday, the agency has again imposed a severe thunderstorm watch for southern Ontario, including Toronto and GTA. It was stated that there’s a “potential for severe thunderstorms this afternoon and evening.” The elaborative summary revealed by Environment Canada explains that wind gusts might reach up to 90 kilometres an hour along with rainfall of around 50 millimetres in an hour. Additionally, the weather agency also issued a special weather statement for the larger portion of southern Ontario, cautioning that humidex values may make it feel like 39 C early on Wednesday afternoon.

Previously on Wednesday morning, Environment Canada ended its special weather statement that was originally issued on Tuesday that warned Toronto and GTA of torrential downpours and damaging winds. A meteorologist, Jill Taylor, suspects that the risk of severe weather for the area still remains. Taylor stated that “as we move through the late-afternoon and early-evening hours, torrential downpours possible and in some cases hail and strong winds could be an issue for today.” She alleged that “we’ll have some clearing, but that sunshine just provides the energy or the fuel if you will for the potential, or aids in the production of more thunderstorms.”

In comparison to Monday, she elucidated that “the difference for today from the other day when we had the flooding, the storms were very slow-moving. Today, they should move through quite quickly … the drainage systems should be able to handle the wet weather that we get for today.”
