Canadian Prime Minister, Stephen Harper, is anticipated to completely revamp his federal cabinet today as sources close to the PMO claim that the changes will be “substantial and significant.” The decision of much-awaited cabinet shuffle is anticipated to be made at around 11 a.m. ET at Rideau Hall. A source predicted that “[it] will be a substantial and significant shuffle,” explaining that “there will be new faces and younger members alongside experienced and capable hands.” It was also added that the shuffle is expected to bring in more women in cabinet, though the government’s overall focus will still be the economy.

So far, a minimum of three ministries are confirmed to be shuffled in the coming makeover, as Harper will have to fill the vacancy left by Vic Toews, who announced to resign as public safety minister and the MP for Provencher in Manitoba last week. On the other hand, the current fisheries minister, Keith Ashfield, has also previously announced that he is fighting cancer and hence would request the prime minister to relieve him of his duties in the next shuffle.

Meanwhile, the office of intergovernmental affairs is also vacated after Peter Penashue resigned as the minister in March due to inappropriate election claims, after which Transport Minister, Denis Lebel, assumed the intergovernmental affairs job. However, Lebel is now fully occupied in the calamity of train disaster in Lac-Mégantic. Third most likely shuffle will be of the Environment Minister, Peter Kent, who has publicly acknowledged that he would not mind if he is shuffled out of cabinet.
