Vancouver Mayor Demands Overhaul of Train Safety Rules after Lac-Megantic

Vancouver mayor Gregor Robertson has demanded that local safety measures and protocols governing the shipment of dangerous goods should be assessed in light of the recent rail disaster that took place in Lac-Megantic, Que., and conclude suggestions to prevent anything of such sort to take place in Vancouver. Robertson instructed city staff to examine rules governing the shipment of dangerous goods by rail in Vancouver and furnish any feasible recommendations that could improve safety protocols.

Informing reporters on Tuesday, Robertson stated that “we want to be sure that we’ve got best practices in place,” explaining “and that nothing like the Lac-Megantic nightmare could happen here.” He added that “I’m hopeful we don’t have a problem here and that Vancouverites aren’t at risk right now,” while adding that “our next council meeting isn’t ‘til September, but I would expect to hear back from staff urgently if there is a major risk identified.” Robertson raised concerns regarding train safety at almost the same time when Transport Canada published multiple emergency rail directives that are supposed to be effective immediately.

The directives make it compulsory that at least two crew members should accompany any work train that transports dangerous goods. Additionally, it was also required that no locomotive that is attached to one or more loaded tank cars transporting dangerous goods shall be left unattended on a main track. Consequently, the rail regulatory authority allowed a time period of five days for operators to guarantee that all unattended locomotives on a main track or sidings are protected from unauthorized entry.
