In an announcement made with Jay Feaster and Ken King, Brian Burke was confirmed on Thursday to have been appointed as the president of hockey operations, responsible for the hockey side of the Calgary Flames.

Making the announcement at a press conference at the Scotiabank Saddledome, the president and Chief Executive Officer of the Calgary Sports and Entertainment Corporation, King, stated that “he has had a huge impact on our sport, not only on the ice but in many many other ways,” adding that “we couldn’t be more pleased that he decided to join us.” King alleged that the Flames general manager, Jay Feaster, will be asked to report directly to Brian Burke. Meanwhile, Burke mentioned in an unambiguous manner that Feaster is the general manager, and will continue to be the spokesperson for the team, while he tends to hold a background role.

Burk elaborated that “this is a different job.” He elucidated that “I talked to my guys in other sports who have pondered this scenario and watched it work. This job allows a guy of my seniority to do less of the grunt work and still be involved … in terms of commitment to the community, I don’t think there’s a group that can touch them let alone surpass them. This job has great appeal to me.” He further added that “I know people think I need to drive the bus all the time. But I’m actually a pretty good teammate, too.”
