A man was shocked to learn that staff at a long-term-care facility in Peterborough, Ont., will not be charged even after acquiring a video proof that shows they mishandled his mother and shoved a soiled cloth into her face. Camille Parent alleged that “I’m puzzled,” explaining that “I’m sickened over this. It’s just totally wrong.” Parent has been told by local police that no charges will be laid against staff at St. Joseph’s at Fleming nursing home, where 85-year-old Hellen MacDonald is a resident.
Earlier this year, an elaborative investigation was launched by the hospital after Parent complained to the hospital about seeing scratches and bruises on his mother, who has dementia. Even after Parent had reported to the management, he claims that injuries continued to show up on his mother’s body so he decided to install a hidden camera in her room. During a period of four days surveillance, Parent recorded several disturbing activities in his mother’s room, including her being mistreated while MacDonald gets her diaper changed, an employee shoving a soiled cloth into her face, a pair of St. Joseph’s employees making out in MacDonald’s room as she lies in bed, and employee blowing his nose on her bed sheets.
The hospital has fired four employees after the video surfaced, along with a subsequent investigation by the Ministry of Health which reported to have identified several violations of the Long Term Care Act at the home. However, Parent wants to see charges laid. He asked “why are we not protecting our folks in long-term care,” and “why are we protecting the abusers?”
