In light of the findings of a recent governance review ordered by Health Minister, Fred Horne, the organization has allegedly laid off five of its top executives at the Alberta Health Services on Tuesday. It was disclosed that the five positions collectively carry $2.1 million in severance pay. Among other the findings believed to be included in the report was that the structure of Alberta Health Services is top-heavy and not beneficial for front-line workers.

It was suggested in the review that the organizational structure should be maintained by dividing the province into north and south, with each region led by a vice-president, chief operating officer and medical director. The spokesperson of Mr. Horne, John Muir, refused to confirm the names of those dismissed, though sources claim that they include executive vice-president and chief operating officer, Chris Mazurkewich, executive vice-president and chief medical operating officer (clinical operations), David Megran, senior vice-president of communications, Roman Cooney, senior vice-president of the Edmonton zone, Mike Conroy, and the senior vice-president of priorities and performance, Barbara Pitts.

However, Muir did confirm that the decision to lay off top ranking officials was prompted by the findings of the review of governance conducted by Janet Davidson, who is the official administrator hired by Mr. Horne after he sacked the entire 10-member AHS board on June 12 due to a dispute over executives’ compensation. Horne and the board disagreed over whether to award $3.2 million in performance pay to 99 health executives for fiscal 2012-13 year.
