In a recently published auditors report, it has been updated that the cancelation of two power plants in the Toronto suburbs cost roughly a billion dollars, which is way more than previously speculated in an audit and several times more than what total Ontario’s Liberal government originally claimed. Publishing an all-inclusive report, Auditor-General Bonnie Lysyk revealed that a series of “questionable decisions” by the government, including the intervention of former premier Dalton McGuinty’s office, further heightened the pricetag much higher than necessary.

The estimated cost of cancelling the plant in Oakville, as speculated by Ms. Lysyk’s audit was found to be around $675-million. Though, the report mentioned that this total might increase even more by $140-million, depending upon the cost of gas. Summing up these figures along with previously-calculated cost of cancelling the other plant in Mississauga, the accumulated cost of killing both highly controversial projects was found to lie between $950-million and $1.09-billion. It is most widely believed that the Liberal’s government knowingly cancelled both high-scale projects to help gain more votes in local Liberal MPPs re-election in the 2011 vote.

Another issue highlighted during the cancellation of Oakville gas-plant was that this projected was approved by The Ontario Power Authority and handed to TransCanada Energy Ltd. for construction. The audit revealed that even when the government had decided to cancel building both plants in the fall of 2010, Mr. McGuinty’s staff made a decision that caused cancellation costs to jump. It was alleged that the government chose to compensate the company even when it was obligated to do this.
