The Toronto Police Service would like to make the public aware of arrests in two sexual assault investigations.
In November 2011, police received a report of a sexual assault.
It is alleged that:
– in November 2011, a man contacted a woman through a language-learning internet site called Conversation Exchange
– the man offered to assist the woman with learning English and she agreed to teach him Japanese
– the man and woman met, during which meeting the man convinced the woman to attend his residence
– the man sexually assaulted the woman while at his residence
In January 2012, police arrested Avik Sarkar, 38, of Toronto. He was charged with:
1) Sexual assault
In August 2013, police received a report of a sexual assault.
It is alleged that:
– in August 2013, a man contacted a woman through a language-learning internet site called Conversation Exchange
– the man offered to assist the woman with learning English and she agreed to teach him Japanese
– the man and woman met, during which meeting the man convinced the woman to attend his residence
– the man sexually assaulted the woman while at his residence
On Wednesday, October 9, 2013, police arrested Avik Sarkar, 38, of Toronto. He has been charged with:
1) Sexual assault
He was scheduled to appear in court at Old City Hall, on Thursday, October 10, 2013, at 10 a.m.
Police believe there may be more victims. The suspect is known to use an alias of “Steve” and an e-mail address of “happytoronto8”.
