Councillor Paul Ainslie has announced to have resigned from Mayor Rob Ford’s executive committee on Friday, i.e. only three days after he voted against a Scarborough subway extension in favour of light rail. At the time Ainslie (Ward 43, Scarborough East) was appointment as an executive member, he began work as a staunch Ford ally though he soon started to oppose the mayor at different occasions. An analysis by Metro’s Matt Elliott says that Ainslie opposed the mayor on significant issues more than half the time during his appointment from January through August.

A short while after his resignation, Ainslie openly opposed Mayor Ford, alleging that he “ran out of ideas a long time ago” and has a “lack of strategic objectives.” Ainslie stated that he “felt bullied on a number of occasions” this year by Ford’s vote-whipping staff. He added that “I’ve got to go into my community and justify his personal friendships.” Explaining his point of view, Ainslie elaborated that “I get a lot of that as well. That gets reflected on me as a member of his executive committee. Cumulative, all things considered, I’m just not happy. I didn’t see any benefit for me either politically or personally to stay on his executive.”

On the other hand, Councillor Doug Ford defended his brother, i.e. Mayor, and the mayor’s staff does, asserting that they do not use bullying tactics. He alleged that Ainslie started opposing the Mayor when the mayor picked someone else for the budget chief post in which Ainslie expressed interest. Doug alleged during an interview that “that’s when the whole pendulum swung. That’s it. A hundred per cent. That’s when it started.”
