A group of McGill University professionals, who have worked hard to earn good repute in mental health, have openly spoken against the Quebec’s proposed charter of values, asserting it to be completely unhealthy. An open letter addressed to the authorities, a copy of which was obtained and published by Montreal Gazette’s Tuesday edition, alleged that the group of professors, psychiatrists and researchers completely refute the charter, which aims to make it compulsory for government employees to refrain from wearing overtly religious symbols.

The group mentioned that the charter is “profoundly misguided,” while adding that they are “deeply concerned” regarding the charter and its possible negative effects that could lead to irreversible issues to “mental health, well-being and social integration.” The group stated that they plead for tolerance and acceptance, instead of the stereotyping and social exclusion they say would be created by the ban. The letter straightforwardly mentioned that “neutrality as a veil for discrimination: Under the banner of secularism and neutrality, the proposed Charter launches an attack on minorities and on the very idea of diversity in society.”

Among those who signed the open letter was the director of McGill’s division of social and transcultural psychiatry, Laurence J. Kirmayer, who also mentioned during an interview that the charter is a direct attack on the need to recognize, respect and include cultural communities. He stated that “part of cultural safety is having adequate representation of cultural minorities in the health-care system, in positions of power and authority.”
