Senator Mike Duffy’s lawyer, Donald Bayne, has spoken out in favor of his client regarding the whole senate spending and repayment scandal encircling the senator. Bayne alleged that Mr. Duffy was made to believe that he would lose his seat in the Red Chamber if he did not accept a plan from the Prime Minister’s Office for repaying tens of thousands of dollars in housing expenses. He further announced that Mr. Duffy has decided to take legal action against the Senate over a motion aimed at suspending him from the Red Chamber, along with fellow senators Pamela Wallin and Patrick Brazeau. The motion filed by government leader in the senate asks to suspend all three of them without pay, citing “gross negligence” in managing their parliamentary resources.

Mr. Duffy was earlier accused of receiving almost $90,000 from Mr. Wright, then Prime Minister’s Chief of Staff, to repay expense claims that were being investigated by the Senate. Mr. Wright resigned shortly after the revelation. Mr. Bayne alleged that his client was never allowed a fair chance to defend himself against a range of allegations against him. He pointed out that Mr. Duffy was forced into accepting a “scenario” orchestrated by the Prime Minister’s Office.

Addressing a gathering of reporters on Monday, Mr. Bayne declared that it seems like the Conservative majority in the Senate intends to “act like a mob” in its plans to suspend Mr. Duffy regardless of the evidence or the results of an ongoing RCMP investigation into Mr. Duffy and other senators’ expense claims.
