Canada’s Commissioner for Complaints for Telecommunications Services (CCTS) has recently mentioned in a latest report that it received 240 per cent more complaints this year regarding wireless roaming. The agency that aims at trying to highlight and resolve clients’ disputes with telecom firms, alleged that if your telecom provider reported you to a credit agency because of an unpaid debt you didn’t actually owe, you are not alone to be victimized.
In the agency’s latest annual report released on Nov. 6, it said that complaints regarding inaccurate or inappropriate reporting to credit agencies have multiplied by an estimate of 165 per cent in one year. The non-profit agency said that it was contacted by numerable customers whose telecom providers had referred them to collection agencies, even though they had paid their accounts. During an interview, commissioner, Howard Maker, stated that “in some cases, customers were disputing a charge with the CCTS and were still referred to collections.”
It was highlighted that a telecom provider’s hurry to hire outside collectors to put a black mark on a customer’s credit bureau profile can have significant consequences, including denial of a loan or a large purchase later on. Maker has been heading the non-profit agency since 2007, he says that according to him, the number of complaints have amplified due to confusion regarding the company’s terms of service. The report stated that “some customers even tell us that key terms were not disclosed at all before they agreed to take the service.”
