In a recently presented report, Parliament’s language watchdog has advised the federal government to improve its commitment to official languages and address “embarrassing lapses” in their counter policies promoted by the Parti Quebecois government in Quebec. The annual report tabled in Parliament on Thursday, quotes Graham Fraser saying that some progress is taking place, but there are many institutions covered by the act, including Air Canada, Canada Post, the Canada Border Services Agency and National Defence, which continue to draw complaints.
Same four institutions rest at the top 10 list for complaints every year since 2006, i.e. when Fraser was first appointed. At the time, his office received more than 5,400 complaints about institutions not respecting the act adopted 40 years ago to protect minority English and French-speaking communities across the country and guarantee their right to federal services in the language of their choice. In his statement Fraser stated that “it is high time all federal institutions understood that official languages are at the very heart of their dealings with citizens and travellers, whether by traditional means such as the telephone or more innovative ones such as social media.” “Inadequate service in English or in French is not and never will be quality service.”
On the other hand, a statement released by Air Canada states that the report recognized it had improved its overall performance since 2008, including the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority; however reports of individual airport authorities in cities such as Toronto, Vancouver and Halifax received lower scores in evaluations completed in 2008.
