While exiting the Memorial Day service at Old City Hall cenotaph on Monday, Mayor Rob Ford alleged, while moving past a supporter, that “I’m not going anywhere, guaranteed.” However, Mayor Ford shall still be prepared to take on sharp criticism over his leadership as he will possibly be facing extensive scrutiny by friends and foes on city council, since they are soon going to debate over whether or not to ask him to take a leave of absence this week to address his “personal issues.”
The embattled mayor has explicitly decided to give that debate priority status on Wednesday, as he informed reporters while leaving city hall that “let’s get it on.” Councillors Denzil Minnan-Wong and Peter Milczyn have held a hardcore stance demanding the mayor to apologize for “misleading” the city, as he previously refuted existence of any video showing him smoking crack cocaine, and accept a request of police to interview him, and apologize for writing a letter of reference for his friend Alexander Lisi, who is charged with drug trafficking and making extortive efforts to obtain the recording from alleged gang members.
It is noticeable, that even in case council adopts the motion, it would only be symbolic in nature, as the governing body cannot force the mayor to leave. Mr. Minnan-Wong stated that “I think it’s critical that council speaks as one voice to say that what he’s done is wrong.” He explained “that he should be going to the police and co-operating, that he should be apologizing and fundamentally that he should go, take a leave of absence, remove himself from council while he gets the help he needs and let the city move forward and not be distracted with any of the future information that might be coming out.”
