According to information provided by the Conservative staffers, which was delivered to Elections Canada investigators by the party’s lawyer, Campaign worker Michael Sona had enthusiastically boasted about his involvement in the fraudulent “Pierre Poutine” robocall in Guelph, Ont. Court documents that are now reportable for the first time show that a concealed witnesses revealed that Sona had told them that he had recorded a message impersonating Elections Canada and sent out the call to a list of phone numbers obtained from a friend.

The allegations laid against Sona are contained in a sworn statement submitted in court by Elections Canada investigator, Allan Mathews, in May and later made public in August though still subjected to a partial publication ban. However, the partial publication ban was lifted by Justice Celynne Dorval on everything except the names of the witnesses on Wednesday after several media outlets appealed in court to challenge the ban. Sona has also consented to lift the ban, though Crown has requested to keep the witnesses’ names a secret. All major news outlets that challenged the ban were present in an Ottawa courtroom on Wednesday at the time of hearing.

Amid cross-examination during the hearing, Mathews confessed that he was called by party lawyer Arthur Hamilton in March 2012, and he informed him of three witnesses that might have information relevant to his investigation into election-day robocalls in Guelph, Ont. He testified that Hamilton “phoned me and told me he had individuals he believed relevant to my investigation that he thought I should interview.”
