Miami-Dade Police believe to have found the body of the man who fell from the plane but are still waiting for ‘official identification’. The Marine Patrol unit found the body in the mangrove area south of Southwest area on the ocean side. The body was found at 10:30 a.m. in the morning and is believed to be of Gerardo Nales, 42, a man from Florida. “Even though we presume that the body found is that of Gerardo Nales, investigators are pending ‘official identification’ from the Medical Examiner’s Office,”said Miami-Dade Det. Alvaro Zabaleta in the statement issued by him. “Additional information will be provided as it becomes available.”
The event took place on Thursday after Gerardo Nales left his condo at Key Biscayne and travelled west to the Kendall-Tamiami Airport, twenty five miles away from his condo. He boarded the plane with a pilot who flew the Piper Malibu single engine plane east over the Biscayne Bay. At about 2000 feet in the air, the plane’s door opened and Gerardo Nales fell off the plane. The pilot then called for help radioing “mayday, mayday, mayday” and told the air traffic controller that the door of his plane was ajar and a passenger had fallen off the plane.
The investigators are yet to determine if a crime was committed though the pilot insists that it was a suicide attempt by Gerardo Nales. ‘He opened the back door and he just fell down the plane,’ said the plane’s pilot.
