A suspect wanted on a countrywide warrant and accused of operating an illegal dental practice in the Vancouver region, David Wu, finally gave up to the authorities after almost three months. During an interview recorded on Sunday, police Constable Rod Steffler revealed that David Wu appeared on Saturday night at the front desk of a police station in Toronto. Steffler alleged that “he was arrested at 6:40 our time Saturday night after he came in, turned himself in and said he was wanted.” He added that “I worked last night, so I arrested him for contempt of court. I was working the front desk at 42 Division in Scarborough.”

Mr. Wu, more popularly known in the region as Tung Sheng Wu, posed to be a dentist at residences in Burnaby and Coquitlam. Wu’s former patients revealed to the court how they travelled through a basement entrance at a Coquitlam home for their appointments. According to an official statement issued by The College of Dental Surgeons of British Columbia, it warned that Mr. Wu “is not a real dentist and is neither qualified nor competent to practise dentistry.” Initially, Wu admitted to comply by a 2003 court order that restricted him from practicing dentistry without a licence.

Last month, a B.C. Supreme Court judge sentenced him three months in jail due to absentia, asserting that Mr. Wu has shown “intention to escape the consequences of his wrongdoing and to resume it elsewhere.” The court was told that Mr. Wu allegedly asked patients to visit a Coquitlam home through July, even after the College of Dental Surgeons of British Columbia raided and closed a clinic in Burnaby in the spring.
