The Freshman Rep. Henry ‘Trey’ Radel pleaded guilty this Wednesday in the D.C. Superior Court to custody of cocaine. Radel, 37, was sentenced to a year of supervised probation and a fine of 250 dollars which has to be paid to the victims compensation fund. The court documents stated that the first term congressman ‘unlawfully, knowingly and intentionally possessed’ the illegal drug.

An undercover agent met Trey Radel and his friend in Dupont Circle at a restaurant. It was the 29th of October and the time was ten p.m., said the prosecutors at the court. Radel asked his friend and the undercover agent to go with him to his house but when the undercover agent declined, he purchased three and a half grams of cocaine for two hundred and fifty dollars from the undercover agent in his car. After the transaction between the agent and Radel was complete, officers surrounded the car and Trey Radel dropped the pack of drugs. He invited the police officers back to his apartment so they could discuss the incident but at his house they found  a vial filled with cocaine.

Radel admitted that he was having problems concerning alcohol and drugs. ‘I’ve hit a bottom where I realize I need help,’ admitted Radal and agreed to seek treatment and counseling. ‘In facing this charge, I realize the disappointment my family, friends and constituents must feel. Believe me, I am disappointed in myself, and I stand ready to face the consequences of my actions,’ confessed Radel, ‘However, this unfortunate event does have a positive side. It offers me an opportunity to seek treatment and counseling. I know I have a problem and will do whatever is necessary to overcome it, hopefully setting an example for others struggling with this disease.’
