A powerful storm system moved into New Mexico this Saturday morning. Predictions of freezing temperatures, heavy snowfall and gusty winds were proven right as winter weather arrived in the west of the United States.  The fierce storm lead to dozens of car accidents in Nevada, flooded many parts of California and drenched many dry roads in Arizona.

The weather has already led to five deaths with many flood and water rescues in California as well as accidents in Arizona and Nevada. California saw three deaths whereas  Oakland saw two deaths including a death by downed power lines. Travelers were forced to reconsider their plans as snow plows worked all night and early morning on Saturday to clear roads across New Mexico and northern Arizona. The forecasters have reported that the fierce storm system will hit the Southwest again before heading east towards the Atlantic coast.

Jennifer Palucki, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service in Albuquerque, said the conditions are expected to worsen by Saturday night. ‘All that arctic air across New Mexico laid the groundwork. Then we have this bigger upper-level storm system over southern California and ahead of that is this nice stream of moisture coming up over New Mexico,’ said Palucki. ‘That makes for a good recipe for snow.’ Federal forecasters expect the system to reach Atlantic coast by the middle of next week bringing with it thundering storms, high winds and showers of snow and ice.
