Toronto Police has confirmed having had filed 21 charges in light of an elaborate investigation that lead to discovery of more than millions of dollars in fake goods and products, including wine, cosmetics and male-enhancement medications. Police revealed that it has laid more than 100 charges in connection with the sale of fake consumer goods worth an estimated $6.5 million. It was explained that these goods “substandard and potentially hazardous.”

Toronto Det.-Const. Andrea Chedas stated that “these goods don’t meet safety standards, and they introduce significant health and safety risk.” It was also added that “the majority of customers are unaware they are purchasing low-cost, unreliable, fake goods that could pose serious health and safety risks to the public.” Additionally, Toronto police Det., Natalie Hegarty, alleged that though these fake products, like the contact lenses seized at a flea market in Barrie, Ont., are not yet inspected by health and safety authorities, but they are surely very risky. She alleged that “I’m no doctor but I would be concerned.”

It was explained that it is natural for consumers to be tempted by the low prices of knockoff products. Police deliberately planned its press conference about the seizures on Black Friday, when shoppers are known for looking for astonishing deals and probably get carried away at times. Hegarty cationed that “some of these products cost $300, $400 if not $1,000, and when the general public sees these for $40 or $50, I think that’s a huge red flag for them,” adding that “they need to be aware that they’re probably buying a counterfeit product.”
