NDP Women’s Issues Critic Cheri DiNovo is calling on the Liberal government to increase support to shelters and victim services, to help more women and children seeking to escape from violent situations.

“Every six days a woman in Canada is murdered by her current or former partner,” said DiNovo during question period this morning. “Ontario shelters like Cornerstone are turning away more and more women and children every year because of a lack of funding. In the first five months of this year alone, at Cornerstone, a record number of 72 abused women have been turned away, to potentially lethal results.”

DiNovo also brought up funding cuts to Victim Services Toronto, the only agency in the city that provides immediate assistance to domestic violence victims. Their funding has dropped from $286 per victim in 1990 to $31 in 2010.

DiNovo says something has to change.

“Today, in acknowledging the 24th anniversary of the Montreal massacre, this government will voice its concern,” said Dinovo, “but how many more women have to die before this government acts?”
