It has been recently exposed that all private participants, accompanying the Prime Minister’s trip to Israel, in one of the largest Canadian delegations will be fully paid for by the taxpayers money, including their air fare and hotel costs, including those invited from Jewish community groups and other non-government organizations. Communications Director of Mr. Harper, Jason MacDonald, confirmed that the delegation leaving on Saturday for the Middle East is anticipated to range between 150 and 200 people, though he quickly added that figure of 200 is “probably high.”

Since the Prime Minister’s Office has not yet officially released the list of those accompanying the Prime Minister on his tour to the Middle East, Mr. MacDonald promised that the information will be disclosed publicly on Saturday. Since it is the Prime Minister’s first-ever trip to Israel, spread over four days, it has attracted many interested officials to seek invitation and be a part of one of the largest, if not the largest, delegation to accompany a prime minister. Apart from bilateral and regional diplomacy, the trip is anticipated to foster Mr. Harper’s political legacy of turning Canadian foreign policy into a staunchly pro-Israel stand.

The delegation does not only includes cabinet ministers, MPs and government officials, but the Prime Minister’s office has also invited representatives of a variety of Jewish community groups. According to some invitees, the list includes representatives from national organizations, like the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs and B’nai Brith, also smaller groups, like the Canadian Society for Yad Vashem.
