Tourism minister, Terry French, alleged that he was completely surprised to hear the news about Mount Pearl South MHA, Paul Lane, having had called a press conference at 11 a.m., especially when multiple sources are repeatedly claiming that he is planning to cross the floor and joining the Liberals. The VOCM and CBC reported early Monday morning that Lane has quit the PC Party to join the official Opposition.
The news came as a shock to many people, especially since Lane has a reputation as a fierce partisan and holds key positions within the party as both caucus chair and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Innovation, Business and Rural Development. Lane has now become the second Tory MHA to have had shifted to the Liberals, first being Tom Osborne who joined the caucus last fall. It is noticeable that a recent poll concluded that Premier Kathy Dunderdale is the least popular premier in the country.
Minister Terry French openly stated that Paul Lane’s alleged defection was a complete shock to him. French mentioned that Lane will have to answer to the people of Mount Pearl on whether joining the Liberals was the right move. And speaking about the leadership capacities of Premier Kathy Dunderdale, French stated that he still totally supports her and she can’t carry all of the blame for the Tories’ current misfortune. He stated that “I think we all shoulder some of the blame.”
