Speaking directly for the first time about the issues encircling the embattled Toronto Mayor Rob Ford, Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne mentioned that his public intoxication and disrespectful outbursts are becoming a hurdle in promoting Toronto and attracting businesses here. She referred to a newly released video of the Mayor Rob, which shows the drunk mayor swearing about police Chief Bill Blair at a fast food restaurant.
Ms. Wynne alleged that Mr. Ford’s “personal issues” mean politicians such as herself are missing out on opportunities to promote the city. Addressing reporters at Queen’s Park, she mentioned that “to the degree that this discussion about one person’s personal issues can detract and distract from the business of growing Toronto and making sure Toronto is the best that it can be, then that does concern me.” She added that “I hope that Rob Ford is able to get the personal support that he needs.”
Directly quoting the video clip that went viral since it was uploaded, Ms. Wynne alleged that she has seen clips of the video on TV and read about it. She alleged that such acts are not helping in trying to convince investors of Toronto’s positive attributes. She mentioned that “Toronto’s a wonderful, vibrant place to live, to do business, to raise a family and it’s very important to me that people outside of Toronto, outside of Ontario, know that.” It was added that “to the degree that we’re not talking about what a wonderful place Toronto is, and the fact that it is a terrific place to bring businesses, that concerns me.”
