A group of protesters have coordinated a demonstration rally to take place on Parliament Hill on Wednesday, focused on asking the government to impose more sanctions against the Ukrainian government. Ottawa recently announcement that selected government officials from Ukraine are now barred from entering Canada. The rally is arranged to start from Parliament Hill in Ottawa at 12 p.m., and come to an end at the Ukrainian Embassy.

The rally has been planned only a day after Citizenship and Immigration Minister, Chris Alexander, declared that from now on key Ukrainian officials will no longer be welcomed in Canada due to recent violent crackdown on pro-democracy protesters. In an announcement made on Wednesday, Alexander mentioned that Ottawa is monitoring the developments in the Ukraine closely, and might consider tougher sanctions in the future. He mentioned in a statement that “we will look at all other options beyond what we’ve done,” and added that “there’s a very tense situation still underway. The priority for everyone is on preventing more violence from taking place.”

Additionally, Alexander also stressed that “we want to focus on the step in Ukraine that has caused the most tension, that has caused the most escalation of the crisis, and that was the violence against peaceful protesters.” He confirmed that the number of officials banned to enter the country is not huge, though he added that it could grow. He mentioned that “it’s not a small number, it’s not a huge number either,” and that “the number of people on the list might actually change as we get more information and consult with our allies.”
