The driver involved in a fatal single-vehicle crash along Gateway Boulevard last week is wanted on a Canada-wide warrant and facing numerous criminal charges.
Ryan Richard Wilneff, 28, from Nova Scotia, is arrestable for impaired operation causing death, dangerous driving causing death, possession of a controlled substance, and four breach of probation orders.
The accused sustained non-life threatening injuries in the early morning crash that killed a 28-year-old male passenger on Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2014.
Wilneff walked away from the hospital and his whereabouts are unknown. The Edmonton Police Service Major Collision Investigation Section expanded Wilneff’s warrant for arrest from provincial to Canada-wide due to the severity of the charges.
Background:
A 28-year-old male was driving a Jeep Wrangler northbound on Gateway Boulevard at 2 a.m. on Jan. 22, 2014, when the vehicle reportedly veered off the road between 60 and 61 Avenue, knocking down a light standard, continuing through a parking lot and striking several billboards and trees in its path, before colliding head-on into the cement/brick wall of a business.
Speed and alcohol are believed to be factors.
