Military police has recently revealed in a press conference that they averted a potentially dangerous situation by arresting a former soldier, carrying a loaded handgun, at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright on Wednesday while investigating online death threats against people at the base. It was explained that an off-duty military police officer in Kingston, Ont., was identified making death threats and posting threatening posts on social media on Thursday, who was reported to military police and hours later he was spotted in Wainwright, Alta. Military police arrested the suspect, arrested him and seized a loaded 9mm Berretta.

Maj. Yves Desbiens, of the Canadian Forces Military Police Group, explained that “the military police member stumbled on some threats and he quickly realized that it was something more than just some random comments online, it could possibly be dangerous for the safety of some individuals and personnel from Wainwright.” It has not yet been clarified which social media platform was used to make threats. Desbiens alleged that “we can’t stress enough the exemplary work of our off- and on-duty military personnel have done,” as he praised that “within hours they had done an amazing job of preventing a potentially devastating situation.”

The suspect who served at 3rd Canadian Division Support Detachment in Wainwright, Dennis Charlong, has been accused of possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, carrying a concealed weapon, possession of a prohibited or restricted firearm, along with one count of uttering threats. Wainwright is located about 200 km southeast of Edmonton.
