The federal government finally released details on Monday about the events planned on May 9 to commemorate National Day of Honour for the Afghan mission. According to the announcement made by Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s director of communications, Jason MacDonald, the event will include a parade to Parliament Hill and a display of air power in a fly-past over downtown Ottawa.

Prime Minister Harper declared May 9 to be a national day of honour in mid-March, in order to commemorate the country’s more than 12-year military commitment to Afghanistan. However, since that announced the government revealed very little or no details about the event, increasing concern among veterans groups that they won’t have enough time to prepare and organize for the commemoration. However, in the press release issued on Monday morning, MacDonald explained that that a parade will begin at 12:30 at the Canadian War Museum on May 9, which is scheduled to reach Parliament Hill at around 1 p.m. that day. The parade is anticipated to include 300 soldiers from various units, 32 police and 50 civilians, whereas Afghan veterans will be asked to join the parade at Bank and Wellington streets.

In addition to that, MacDonal alleged that there will be two fly-pasts of military aircraft over the city, including CP-140 maritime surveillance aircraft, a C-17 strategic transport aircraft, Airbus and Hercules transport planes and Griffon and Chinook helicopters. MacDonald alleged that he didn’t know how many communities would participate and that “we don’t have total costing for it yet.”
