The federal Liberals have announced their proposal to fix the troubled Temporary Foreign Workers program as they publicly revealed their five-point plan to do just that. The program was recently put on hold for food industry after increasing reports showed employers are abusing it. According to the Liberals, the program requires key changes and the program introduced by their party should be overhauled.

In his remarks, Immigration critic John McCallum mentioned that the Conservatives have made a mess of the otherwise successful program by expanding its mandate and doubling the number of foreign workers. He explained that “the Conservatives have loosened every rule. We must re-tighten those rules,” adding that “the program must be dramatically scaled back and re-focused on its original purpose, which was to admit foreign workers on a short-term basis, where Canadians were genuinely not available.” McCallum made several suggestions for the Conservative government for re-strengthening the program. He proposed the government should reduce the number of temporary foreign workers, make it obligatory for employers to provide proof that Canadians won’t take the jobs, and increase enforcement of the rules.

In addition to that, the Liberals have also demanded the government to hold an investigation by the Auditor General into the program’s abuse. There have been mounting number of reports of companies firing Canadians and hiring cheaper foreign workers instead. McCallum stated that he’s sickened by the latest reports of abuse because “it is utterly wrong, not to say unlawful, to exploit temporary foreign workers in this way.”
