The University of Saskatchewan has announced to have reversed part of a decision made earlier regarding the firing of the executive director of the university’s School of Public Health (SPH), Dr. Robert Buckingham, on Wednesday morning. Dr. Buckingham was sacked from his position as the executive director position as his tenure was stripped for speaking out over concerns with the TransformUS process.

Approximately 24 hours after Dr. Buckingham was asked to leave the campus, the university stated that it has decided to immediately reverse part of their initial decision. According to the announcement by the president of the University of Saskatchewan, Ilene Busch-Vishniac, “Dr. Robert Buckingham, who was terminated from his position on May 14, will not return to that leadership position. He will, however, be offered a tenured faculty position.” Furthermore, the president stated that “academic freedom and tenure are sacrosanct at the University of Saskatchewan. This case, however, is not about academic freedom. Dr. Buckingham was removed from his executive director position for acting contrary to the expectations of his leadership role.”

According to Buckingham’s remarks on Thursday’s announcement, he said it was a “step in the right direction” but said he would consider the university’s offer. He said that “Certainly I would have preferred to stay as dean for another five weeks.” Having said that, he alleged that despite having had spoken to a lawyer, he did not intend to sue the U of S over this ordeal. He said “I really want to leave here without hurting the university any more than it has been hurt.”
