The Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board has unanimously decided to write a letter to federal Liberal leader, Justin Trudeau, and protest against his stance on abortion. In a recent announcement, Trudeau revealed that the federal Liberal Party would screen any new candidates to make sure they are pro-choice and all existing members are expected to commit to a pro-choice vote on any proposed measures relating to abortion.
In opposition to Trudeau’s ideas, Board chairperson, Pat Daly, mentioned to have proposed writing a letter “of concerned protest” against Trudeau’s stance. He alleged that “obviously that’s something that is of great concern to our board” and “the trustees were unanimous in their support.” According to the board’s website, its Culture of Life committee aims to “support and enhance the education of students about issues around the beginning and end of life – particularly abortion and euthanasia.” In addition to that, the board has also made a routine of sending busloads of students to the annual March for Life anti-abortion rally in Ottawa, with 154 making the trip earlier this month.
According to Daly, the board is primarily concerned with Trudeau’s announcement due to its pro-life stance, but also because of the implications for people running for public office. He said that “just to deny people of faith or conscience the ability to run for a political party, is in our view, a very, very concerning precedent and not really one that promotes democracy.” Daly stressed that “we were deeply, deeply concerned with what he said.”
